Hey Boy!!

Saying bye to her friends

August 18, 2012: Today we went to Roseau, Dominica. The drive took us 90 minutes on some of the craziest roads I’ve ever seen. Triple hairpin turns down 1-lane (2-way!) roads with massive dropoffs and no guardrails. Bladder-rattling bumps the whole way. (And of course Em always loves going without a car seat!) The views were stunning. So tropical and green everywhere you look!

In Roseau we went through the wet and dry markets, which are labeled the last ‘authentic’ markets in the Eastern Caribbean. And having been through markets in 20+ countries, I can attest that it was a nice change of pace to not have rows of vendors lined up selling junk ‘Made in China’ out of a box.  Everything was made by the person selling it to you, from hats to jewelry to dresses and more.

Next stop was Trafalgar Falls, a beautiful double waterfall that splashes into boulders and huge rocks as it works its way down the mountainside. Near the bottom of the waterfall is a natural hot spring that joins the stream. It’s crazy.  Walk 30 feet from one stream to the other and you’re talking a temperature difference of 30-40F in the water! Very neat experience and without the sulfuric smell of other places like Wai-O-Tapu.

As you can see from the last 2 pics, Em has yet to meet a stranger on this trip.  From the boys at the park (“Hey boys!!!”) to the waiters and waitresses at Jungle Bay, she has enjoyed meeting all sorts of new friends. Tonight we pack up, and with a 5:45am wake-up call we head to our final vacation destination… St. Maarten!
