Early AM, getting ready for surgery

Updating the internets... but not me :)

What?! Forget the kids, I want a ride!

Let's rock.

She made it!

January 16, 2012: Today was the big day! We were out of the house by 6:30am for Em’s ear tube surgery. She was a trooper and did really well, the whole thing took about 5 minutes and she was back to our room within 10-15 minutes. Lots of laying around and sleeping for everyone this afternoon after she played with Grandma all morning!

Sunday, January 15, 2012

January 15, 2012: Last bath time without ear plugs for awhile.  Surgery tomorrow!

Riding in Style!

Heading down to the tarmac

Pulling up to our plane, CRAZYYYYY

Thanks, Delta!

The dreaded text...

January 10, 2012:  This post is supposed to be about how we’re stuck in Atlanta for the night because we missed our flight.  But instead, it’s a tale of a level of customer service that I’ve never before experienced.

Our flight out of San Juan was slightly delayed, and we had a tight 39 minute connection in ATL to begin with. We land with about 25 minutes until our flight home was scheduled to take off. That’s doable.  But then the taxi to our gate takes 7 minutes. And on the way in, I get a horrific text from TripIt. “DL422 arr Gate B36. 20 min until dep DL2281, gate C51.” My heart sunk. A quick look at the ATL Terminal map will tell you why.  B36 the the last gate in the terminal, C51 the last gate in the next one over.

Google Maps puts it at .6 miles from B36 to C51.   With my wife, my parents, the baby, a gate-checked stroller, and our carry-on luggage? Oh, and the gate closes 15 minutes before departure.  So we have 3 minutes to get off the plane and get over there. Which *is* doable if everyone runs a 6 minute mile. So I’m not about to give up.

We were the last row of business class and my parents the first exit row of economy, so we were going to be the first 4 off the plane. (Row 7 + Row 18 on the Boeing 757-200 for you non-travel nerds.) I tell them we’re going to leave the stroller behind and just run as hard and fast as we can, and when I get to the gate I’ll beg for them to hold it a few more moments.

Ready………..Set………………..Announcement?

"Passenger Brad Ward, please meet me directly outside of the plane."

"Are you Brad Ward?"

"Yes…"

"Come with me, please. We’re driving you over to your next flight."

"Can my parents come too?!?!?!?!?!?!"

"Yes, let’s go!"

And just like that, we were whisked away.  Out the side door of the jetbridge, down to the tarmac, and right into a shiny new Porsche Cayenne. What on Earth is happening?!

"As a valued high priority member of the Delta family, we wanted to make sure you did not miss your flight home.  And we’ve also grabbed your stroller for you out of the cargo hold."

Away we go, across the airport, with taxiing airplanes all around us.  The Porsche pulls up to the steps, we walk up and straight on to our flight. With minutes to spare. With time for pictures and some video too, of course :)

So instead of typing this from Atlanta, I’m doing it from the comforts of home. And I’m very thankful for that. Thanks to Delta for amazing and unexpected customer service. WHAT A RIDE!

At Casa Bacardi

On the Beach

On the Beach

January 9, 2011: Jen and I went to the Bacardi Rum Factory for a tour.  It was definitely no Bourbon Trail, but we still got 2 free drinks (Cuba Libre!) and had a good time learning more about the history of Bacardi.  Then we finally got some long awaited beach time, where Em was content to be half-buried in sand and play with shells.   That night we went into Old San Juan for dinner, and calling it a catastrophe would be an understatement. :)  Apparently the last night of vacation with my parents is always going to be a memorable one! Last year we were mobbed by about 15,000 mosquitoes at our last meal.

Big Tree Trail, El Yunque Rainforest

Hiking through the rainforest

Let's go on a hike!

Highest peak at El Yunque

Looking back out to the Caribbean Sea

La Mina Falls

Jen and Em, La Mina Falls

January 8, 2012: Today we packed up and headed an hour east of San Juan to the El Yunque Rainforest. This is the only tropical rainforest in the United States! After seeing a roadside waterfall and going up a 70’ lookout tower, we took a ~2 mile trail to La Mina Falls. Once we got there, the shoes and socks came off and we dipped our feet in the freshwater for a bit! After that, we went to Luquilla Beach and then back to Conrado for the evening. I struck some luck at the hotel casino, doubling my money at Roulette! Let the wheel spin, baby!

Walking through Old San Juan

Tired child.

January 7, 2012:  We visited Old San Juan today, and it was incredible! We loved the old, colorful buildings and walking through the 16th century forts. We had lunch at a local restaurant in the area, did some shopping, and then went back that night for dinner at Al Dente. Puerto Rico is celebrating 3 Kings Day, so there are tons of activities going on. Live music on every street corner, it seems!    Emelyn was a trooper today, not getting lunch until nearly 3pm and her nap was several hours later than normal. As you can see in the last picture, she was quite ready for bed. :)
