August 5, 2011: Today we went to a village near the mountains that separate Haiti and the Dominican Republic. They were “better off” than those in the displaced tent camps, but by no means rich by America’s standards. The children were happier and a little healthier (scabies coughs vs. malaria/TB/cholera) and the community was stronger. NVM has recently started reaching out to this village, with plans to build the first latrine and a church on some purchased land in the area. Tomorrow we’ll be heading back to a new IDP tent camp and the construction team will be pouring a concrete slab for the new office.
