Train ride back to Cairns

Sleepy baby, happy mommy

September 11, 2011: Last day in Australia! Today we went to Kuranda, a village in the rainforest near Cairns. We took a skyrail (cable car) up over the mountains, then came back down on a train.  While in Kuranda, we shopped at the markets, got to hold a koala, and fed/played with some kangaroos and wallabies!  It was a great day.

The highlight and unexpected event of the day was running into our friend Mike in the middle of the rainforest during one of the cable car stops! He’s over working in Sydney for a few months and happened to be visiting Cairns this weekend as well.  We ended up on the same train car back to Cairns AND the same flight back to Sydney tonight, so we had a lot of time to catch up and chat, which was great. Always fun to see familiar faces out and about in the world! :)

Tomorrow is the ‘time warp’ day, where we watch the sunrise in Sydney, board at 10am Monday, and then land in LA at 7:20am Monday, where we get to watch the sun come up on Monday again!  The journey home begins… now. G’night mate!

A kangaroo leaping through the field

Crab art - working to make his tunnels

Wild turkey in the Daintree Rainforest

Skink - a snake-looking lizard

Stay...very...still... a funny lizard

Baby crocodile on the banks

A MUCH bigger crocodile. He saw lunch...

And he grabbed it. Saw him chompin' it!

Speed bumps for the cassowary bird...

..before the cassowary becomes the bump!

September 10, 2011: [Animal Edition] We spent today in the Daintree Rainforest, and saw several cool animals.  From skinks (snake-looking lizards) to wild turkeys, to another lizard who assumed we wouldn’t see him if he stayed… very… very… still…

The big winners of the day were a massive 10 foot crocodile in the Daintree River, as well as over 250 kangaroos in a field at sunset. Another funny sighting is the road sign above, which alerts people to slow down in areas where cassowaries are known to be. There are only 1,200 left, so speed bumps are implemented to slow traffic down.  One local artist did some sign graffiti to illustrate the point. Well done! :) And speaking of art, check out the 2nd photo. It’s from a crab who balls up sand to make his tunnels.  It results in very neat looking patterns on the beach. Since high tide comes twice a day, every 12 hours or so the crab starts all over!

Coolest thing today? All of this was in native environment, no captivity.  Tomorrow’s kangaroos and koalas though… that’ll be a different story. :)

At the Great Barrier Reef

September 9, 2011: [SCUBA Edition] We had a great time diving at the Great Barrier Reef today! The oceans were the calmest I’ve seen, with winds only at 3mi/h, (tomorrow they’ll be up to 25mi/h!) which made it a great day for Em on the boat too!

We saw all sorts of fish and coral, but the turtle took the show! I also got to snorkel with Jen twice, which was a special treat thanks to Grandma and Grandpa hanging out with Emelyn on the boat!

A quick special shoutout to our mates Matt and Nic, who we dove with today and talked with quite a bit. They are circling the world over the course of a year, picking up jobs to pay for the trip and moving along at their pace.  What a great way to travel. That’s them  in the 2nd pic with the turtle! Safe travels!

Supper time!

September 9, 2011: The realization is hitting that this amazing trip is almost over.  But we’re enjoying every single moment while it lasts!  Today is a 2-post special.  First up, some pics from our time at the Great Barrier Reef.

Also, a few shots of the house we’re renting, which is decorated in a Bali theme. It sits in the rainforest, where we awake to the sounds of birds, monkeys the rushing Barron River and much more. And by splitting the cost with Jen’s parents, it’s cheaper than what we would have paid for a two nice hotel rooms here! Win win.

And finally, some pics from tonight’s supper. We went to an aboriginal cultural experience and Jen ended up dancing on stage! Video to come on YouTube? :)
